A quick glimpse of our case-study along the Besòs River in Barcelona. In a short video, Jordi and Clara present what UPWATER is doing, using nature-based solutions to restore and protect water quality. Although their presentation is in Catalan, the message is clear: by using floating wetlands and bio-electrochemical treatment systems, UPWATER aims to mitigate pollution and safeguard groundwater and river water.
The pilot-plant along the Besòs river combines these nature-based technologies with continuous monitoring and sampling, to assess their effectiveness under real-world conditions. In short: this is more than a simple “clean-water” initiative. UPWATER targets long-term water security by combining scientific monitoring, innovative treatment and participatory governance to protect aquifers and surface water in Europe.
